I have a Remington 700 BDL in .270 win that i'm finally pulling out of the gun safe to take to the field this fall. It has nice iron sights on it but i think i will need a scope for a sucsessful deer hunt(gun is drilled and tapped). Hunt mostly in woods shots taken between 100 and 200 yards. Not sure what should get as far as dependable brand, power of scope, will i have to remove irons as well, should i look into a weaver type mount or rings that screw into the receiver? Also dont want to spend arm and a leg. Any suggestions are welcome.

Being it's drilled & tapped, go with the Weaver mounts & rings. You will not have the remove the iron sights. The greatest ignorance is to reject something you known nothing about unknown

DON'T skimp on the scope. If 200yards is your limit and woody ., go with a 1.5x6 or 2x7 with a 40-50 mm objective lense . This will pull in a lot of light , and high quality glass will bring out definition of game animals much better in low light of AM , PM ,or poor weather.

Here you go. http://www.chuckhawks.com/overview_burris_optics.htm Rule of thumb; spend at least as much as you spent on your gun (some say 2X).

Don't get one with a large parallax or you will probabley have to remove the Iron sights, 30yrs ago I bought my .264 in a mod 700, put J.B.Holden high rise mounts so I could use the scope or iron sights for close up shots the Redfield 8x12 I bought had a large parallax on it and it would NOT sit in the scope cradle so I swapped it to a gent with a .270 that didnt have iron sights we were both tickled. I still have the scope on my rifle never been removed since I put it on, used Locktite to put the JB's on to gun barrel. Snider from SEMO.

snider---Please don't take offense, but what the h are you talking about when you are referring to large parallax in reference to the height above the barrel? I think you are talking about the objective lens from what you are describing in the Redfield description. NAHC LM (1991), NWTF, NRA, SPC 5 Army Vet Corp 68-71

You are right TG, I got it bassackereds thanks for catching that. the big bulb on the front end of that scope still rested on the Rear Iron sight even with the J. B. Holden high mounts, I swapped for a Redfield Widefield, both scopes were brand new. $133 00 for the one I bought and $128. for the widefield, been a long time, any way thanks for straightening that post out TG. Would it matter that my front sight has a hood around it, as far as having to remove it or not?

The hood is mainly to protect the front sight from being broken off if you lean it against tree, wall or something like that, but it also helps get the sight picture when you go to aim your gun if you are able to keep the Iron sights , the hood on my 700 is still on with the high rise mounts, it doesn't affect my scope in any way, I have seen several lever guns that didn't come with a hood and the front sight was broken off, how the heck some one wouldn't notice that the sight was gone beat's the H--l out of me. For an affordable yet quality scope that works out to 200 yds, I would recommend a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40.

was actually looking into that scope, is right around my price range and seems like would be able to handle the .270 load. any tips on mounts should i get a one piece or 2? should i look to get elevated rings to get over the hooded front sight(its nearly and inch tall off of the barrel)

Mount the scope low and do not worry about the front sight.
The higher you mount the scope the harder it is to quickly get a site picture and shoot. You will not see the front sight in the scope. One or two piece make little or no diff.

guess im just paranoid about the iron sights interfering with the optics after mounting...put a red dot on my deer shotgun 2 years ago and the iron sights were in the sight picture when mounted...disapointed after droping $ on a nice red dot.

Get Leupold's QR system and then get the QR rings at a height that prevents seing the iron at any power. plus you will be able to quickly use your iron sights if needed, replace scope and it will be back at your sight in within an inch or so. I see my iron front sight on my Remington model 7 at 1.75 to 2.5 power on my Leupold Vari X III 1.75 to 6 and it really does not bother my shooting or game pick up on low power once I got used to it. I also contend with the iron sight within the scope's field at low power on my VX-1 2-7 mounted on a BLR in 358 Win, my Bushnell Elite 2-7 mounted on my Model 70 Pre 64 in 270, my model 71 Win in 348 with a Weaver side mount 1-3 power scope and my 50 caliber Knight Bighorn BP rifle while my 30 year old Balvar scope is at 1.75x. Never a real issue at all on any of these rifles. A lot of game has fallen in front of each. I have been using the Bushnell Elite series scopes with rain guard on my rifles as of late and really like them. They have performed well uinder every conceivable kind of weather condition that you could be hunting in and never once failed me. I use both the 3-9 x 40 and the 5-15 x 50 on my rifles. My Remington 270 has the 5-15 x 50 Bushnell Elite mounted on it currently and I like it for the 200yd+ shots.
