How's a new hunter without any hand-me-downs supposed to get into hunting with all of these high prices? A new low end rifle, now pretty reasonable considering, cost at least $400. A bow, at least that. Camo?...$200. A stand.. at least 200, safety harness for stand, %150. A descent knife to clean and dress, maybe 50. Then there's ammo, arrows, boots, a liscense (not much to be done about that). But it all gets a little crazy. That's not even to take into account an ATV, or other. Life is best lived outside.

Look at nessecities first. Gun or bow, your chopice to start with. Stands? Most good stands come WITH a safety harness. You don't need a $50 knife to clean a deer. I have cleaned manya deer with a 4 inch lockblade or smaller. Camo is available at anywhere from goodwill sotres to military surplus for reasonable prices OR you can opt for one of those bug/camo suits that goes over your clothes for around $40.00. With a little thought and ingenuity you can get into hunting for a reasonable price. It can take years to get everything you want or need but keep in mind, about the time you get to where you think you have it all, your size will change, there will be something new on the market that you'll just HAVE to HAVE. The only necessities are either a gun with ammo or a bow with arrows and a knife. You can get a knife that will do the job for under $20. Everything else is extra. As time goes by you can get more and more stuff if you like but there is no need to break the bank just to get started. Big Lance...

yup, can be expensive.
Try the pawn shop for a gun, bow or BP rifle.
Try Army surplus for clothes.
Folding buck knife will gut deer.
Now boots I do not go cheap on. T.H. Werth US Army (Ret) DA Civilian (Ret) Viet Nam Vet NAHC Life member NRA member

I have to agree with Greybeard aka Big Lance aka Peckerwood and Quailman. Lord what a pair huh ? I like most here I'm sure started hunting with just a rifle or bow and whatever clothes we had at the time. There were millions of deer and other game killed before the advent of camo, latest rifle or bow, and/or treestands and will continue to be so. I remember the first time I wore camo to hunting camp when I was a young feller and all the remarks about NOT being in the military and the other " why " remarks/questions. The camo craze really didn't start nationwide until military surplus became more available to the average person. So stop letting the cost of the latest and greatest gear be a reason to not hunt and get out there and hunt as we all used to do and you can and will kill your preferred game if you put in the time in the fields and woods. My first rifle was a military surplus with open sights and it killed a lot of deer befor I traded up. I did have a good knife and added a Schrade folder that I still use. In todays market there is camo netting. Buy 8' of it and cut a hole in it for your head to go through and wear it like a poncho. You need to use your immagination to get into hunting as well as when hunting. A system I use is to pretend I smoke a pack of cigs a day, only dont buy smokes. Instead take the money and put it in an account and save it. You will be amased at how much cash you will have at the end of a year. Spend that money to upgrade equipment each year. In a few years you can hav some good stuff.

This was more or less a quip after a trip to bass pro shops, lusting over all of the great gear available, and my disappointment in not being able to have everything I want all at the same time. Thanks for the responses... keeps me on solid ground. Life is best lived outside.

You can always shop for used equipment, maybe even borrowed. You may even want to sonsider a shotgun that can be used for small game as well as shoot slugs for deer. End of season clearance sales, Craigslist, and EBAY. I do it for hunting, holidays, etc..I agree the only thing I don't go cheap on are boots. You can find good guns and bows at pawn shops, garage sales, or even estate sales. Last year our local Wally World had a T/C Triumph with weather shield on clearance for $200 NIB at the end of the year. Hunt for bargains and you can find them.
