I am not really a trainer but I train my own dogs from pups. First of all they live in the house with us so we are good friends and understand who is boss, (thats me, most of the time) I give my dogs enough back-yard work, come, heel, sit stay, just basic obedience so that I can keep them safe out in the field. Then I put a shock collar on them and we go for long walks. Have places where we run into wild birds, just don't go there during nesting time or when the game birds are real young. Give the pup as much freedom as he can handle and still be safe (stay away from roads, thin ice, water he can't handle, etc.) correct him immediately when he screws up, that's why I feel a shock collar is important. Praise him when he does good and work a little training into the walks, bring him back when he gets too far out and teach him to cast or quarter or whatever you call it (hunt back and forth in front of you). A shock collar with a tone or vibration works well for this, let him get out as far as you want, que him with the tone and walk in another direction, pointing that way with your extended arm. You should soon be able to "cast" him with hand signals. If he retrieves carry a bumper and throw it for him as you walk, most dogs seem to love this. Then when season opens hunt him just as much as he can handle and be proud and happy when he does good and don't worry  too much about mistakes, you'll both make em and you will both learn from them. You will be amazed how quick a good dog learns to hunt. Good Luck, Fezant

I only have hog dogs. I start with obedience training. Then at 7-8 months start running them with experienced dogs.

I've found that if your having trouble getting your dogs to retrieve, working with them in a hallway (as a pup) sometimes works well. This way the dog can only come back to you and begins to associate the praise with the retreive.

Hope this can help someone.

I only have coonhounds.I just teach them to come when called and lead.As soon as they turn 4 months old I take them to the woods with my old dogs.If they got it in them it will come out.If they don't have it in them no amouth of training does much.Thats when the shovel comes into use.

BrandonBKY That is exactly what it means. You can think its cruel all you want to.Thats your right to think that.Just as its my right to train my dogs and do with the culls as I see fit.

fezant No I'm not related to him,not even the same color he is.I also really don't give a rats ass what you or anyone else thinks.A bullet in the brain of a sub par dog is not cruel. Why waste feed on a dog thats not up to par? you go right ahead and waste time money and feed on a cull dog.Me I'll cut my losses and move on to the next one.I guess you and your kind would sell it and get it passed around from dog trader to the next dog trader? Way some of you act you would think a dog is a person and not a animal. Some of you seem like a stinking animal rights freak.

we think of pets as part of our family and im sure you wouldnt do the same to a family member you need no dogs what so ever this is for hunting dogs ever think of maybe some of your tactics aint up to par to train the dogs right maybe your killing inacent animals because they arent finding you a coon or a bird or rabbit or whatever wow thats just horrible i would say you need a refresher put yourself in that dogs shoes how would you like that. Animals arent just convience items they are family members and im not animal rights freaks but if you were that dog you would root for an animal rights official to save your behind so use common sense before you post and dont play dumb if you post something that down right cruel your going to get criticized so take it as a lesson and dont post stupid things like this on a forum if your going to get offended

1. I am not offended stuff like this does not offend me. 2.They are hunting dogs first and fore most, not family members. 3.I've been hunting and training dogs for over 40 years so I do know what I am doing. 4.You do it your way and waste time with a dog that just don't have what it take to be a top of the line hunting dog. 5.I will do it my way and do what it takes to have a top of the line hunting dog that will almost win most of the time in the competition nite hunts. 6.I will say what I like on here or anywhere else.If you don't like it then don't read my post simple as that. 7.I am done wasting my time with people like you that have no clue what it takes to train and keep top of the line coon hounds.

well walker if your this oh godly amazing dog trainer why aint you on hunting shows and selling dogs that have such unmatched hunting ability because you dont you dont know what your talking about and im not sure the remark on the last post about family tree but the whole ky 3 last name thing do research your not offending me because who cares what you think of ky its a state in which i reside and you crying and pouting out of us getting to you about killing dogs is your own fault dont get mad when you posted that you do that to dogs. WERE NOT ANIMAL RIGHTS FREAKS WERE SANE PEOPLE! And as far as the imbred remark hey my moms from Ohio and my dads from Lexington so dang if you say so and your only as mature as you act and my 3 year old daughters more mature than you are so get a life you dog killer you shouldnt even be allowed dogs
