i have been using .22 hollow point bullets for the past 4 years and i will never go back to solid point bullet. i find them to be far more accurate then the solid point bullets.it doesn't wreck the fur of animals very much either.

I have shot hollow point 22 bullets since i started shooting a 22 when I was 10 and they are very effective.  The ruger auto pistol I have they don't feed as good and they jam but it is an old one my dad got it when he was 14 and he gave it to me.  I love that pistol and like to shoot it so I just buy a box of solid points for it.  I shoot hollow points in my 22mag as well.

Hello everyone

Yes there are hollow point bullets for .22LR! I should know I have been using them since I was just a wee lad! I am now 36! The hollow points that I used to use, "Yellow Jackets" by Remington and "Stingers" by CCI.

Here are the brands that I found that make hollow points in .22LR:

Aguila makes hollow points in .22LR,Eley makes Hollow points in .22LR,CCI makes hollow points in .22LR,Federal makes hollow points in .22LR,Fiocchi makes hollow points in .22LR,Lapua makes hollow points in .22LR,Remington makes hollow points in .22LR,RWS makes hollow points in .22LR,SK makes hollow points in .22LR, and Winchester makes hollow points in .22LR

I checked on Midwayusa.com.  There may be other makers of .22LR ammunition that have hollow points, that are not listed here. I also check on Cabelas.com, but midwayusa.com had a larger selection of rimfire ammunition to choose from.

They are all pretty effective, would be my guess based on my experience with the different .22LR ammunition that I have used. It all depends on shot placement!  If you are well practiced with your firearm and the ammunition you plan to use, then it,the bullet, will be effective as long as you place the bullet in a killing location! I have always tried to go for head shots with the .22LR. Especially if you plan on eating what you kill!

I have been a fan of and used CCI Mini-Mag 36gr Hollow Points since I was a kid. They have always been very effective against squirrels, armadillos, rabbits, and snakes. They work very well in bolt action, and auto rifles as well as pistols.

I have a Marlin .22 mag. I use CCI Maxi-Mag V hollow points almost exclusively. It's a lot of gun for squirrels, but I go for the head shots. Nice thing is, it's enough to drop a coyote from 100+ yards.

I really don't know why you need hollow points for squirrel hunting. If you use a accurate rifle and make head shots, they aren't needed. I have even used shorts, on coons, with the correct shot placement HP  are not needed. If I can use a .177 pellet to get squirrels a solid point 22 will be more than enough on them plus groundhogs, rabbits, coons. opussum, fox and etc.

CCI Stingers are the best in my opinion by far. 32grain hollow point at 1600+ fps. Helluva round for such a small caliber.

the 22 hollow points are great for small game, from something as small as a squirrel to something the size a coyote. They work for just about any small game u can possibly hunt.

Interesting string of replies for a message originally posted 3/2006. I hope he found out what he needed to know before now.

I, too regularly use .22 Shorts for squirrel, but I still use hollowpoints, they don't cost any more and they are more accurate. Long ago I noticed that benchrest shooters use hollowpoints. The reason is that a hollowpoint bullet is longer than a softpoint of the same weight, giving better ballistic coefficient. I use Longs for fun, and Long Rifles for rabbits, and other game at longer ranges. All I use is hollowpoints, believing it's best to practice with what you use when hunting. The light Stingers and clones give great flat shooting trajectory for accuracy at longer ranges and hit pretty hard on rabbits, but the bullet is too light and breaks up without doing enough damage on heavier game, like groundhogs, racoons, coyotes and foxes. That's been my experience, anyway. I like heavier, hollowpoint bullets going as fast as possible.
Bullet placement is critical. Practice, practice, practice. That's my $.02 worth.

I use CCI stingers for shooting the turtles in my tanks and rabbits in the fields.  They work great.  Never had a problem.  I do like them better than the Remington hollow points.  But it's not a big deal.  The remington's shoot fine as well.

CCI Stingers, all the way.  You can really tell the power difference when using them with std. 22LR too.

On squirrels and rabbit hollow point bullets are just better, as the shock the animal instantly. The remington Long rifle Hightspeed hollow point has been my favorite for years as compared to solid nose bullets. The 22 short hollow point is ringer and will kill squirrels sometimes better than a 22 long rifle bullet as they have the majic dwell time inside the target few know about. A lot like deer hunting with a 45-70.
